April 2013 Entry Level Smartphone Buyers Guide

I start of every month, with a suggestion of the best phones available in the Philippine market, breaking them into different price clusters. Under entry level smartphones, are those priced at below Php10,000. These entry level phones have gotten to the point where, for many consumers, they really need nothing more.

The prices posted are those covered by an official manufacturers warranty.

1. Huawei Ascend Y300 (Php5,490) - Bringing premium features to the entry level

At first glance, the Huawei Ascend Y300 is nothing spectacular. A 4-inch, dual core Android phone for Php5,490 is a dime a dozen these days. There are some very competent phones at cheaper prices. You can find the Cherry Mobile Flare, Burst and Thunder, priced from Php3,999 to Php4,999. You will also find similar phones in the 5K-6K ranger priced offerings from Cloudfone, MyPhone and Starmobile.

Quick specifications:
  • Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
  • 4-inch WVGA (480 x 800) display
  • 4 GB internal storage expandable via a MicroSD card slot
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 1 GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
  • 5 MP autofocus primary camera with LED Flash
  • 0.3 MP front camera
  • HSPA
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth
  • A-GPS
  • 1730 mAh battery
Despite the higher price tag, I recommend that you make the Huawei Ascend Y300 your point of entry into the smartphone world. It offers several advantages over it lower cost and similarly priced rivals.

The Huawei Ascend Y300 runs Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), while its competition still runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Given that low cost phones rarely, if ever, receive a software upgrade it makes sense to select one with a later version out of the box. Running a newer version of Android is worth a premium of a few hundred pesos in my opinion.

The Huawei Ascend Y300 comes equipped with Gorilla Glass. This, though scratch and shatter resistance glass, is what you find protecting higher end and mid-level handsets. Equipping the Huawei Ascend Y300 with Gorilla Glass now means that lower priced does not have to equate to lower quality materials.

The trend these days is to equip smartphones with larger batteries. The bigger the display, the heavier the power consumption, and hence the need for a larger battery. The "standard" has been to equip lower priced 4-inch phones with a 1500 mAh battery, and larger 4.5-inch phones with a 1700 to 1800 mAh battery. The Huawei Ascend Y300 comes with a 1730 mAh battery. Mated to a 4-inch diaplay, this will give you 15-20% longer battery life than cheaper or similarly price phones.

Basically, while many of the local smartphone brands offer nice low cost phones, the Huawei Ascend Y300 sends the message: It is time to level up.

You can read more about the Huawei Ascend Y300 at this link.

2. Cherry Mobile Flame 2.0 (Php6,999) - Bringing quad-core power into the entry level.

The Cherry Mobile Flame 2.0 should be available in retail shelves in the next two weeks or so. It is a more powerful device than the Huawei Ascend Y300.  But it also takes a few steps back. Compared to the Huawei Ascend Y300, you get a larger 4.5-inch display, a more powerful quad core processor and double the RAM. However, the Cherry Mobile Flame 2.0 does not come with Gorilla or Dragontail Glass to protect the display, and the 1600 mAh battery is small for the phones screen size.

Quick specifications:
  • Android 4.1
  • 4.5-inch qHD (540 x 960) display
  • Dual sim support
  • 4 GB internal storage expandable via a MicroSD card slot
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 1.2 GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor
  • 5 MP autofocus primary camera with LED Flash
  • 0.3 MP front camera
  • HSPA
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth
  • A-GPS
  • 1600 mAh battery
For most users, the 4.5-inch display is probably the main draw. With smartphones now having gone beyond communication, being a hand held web browser, photo and document editor, eBook Reader and gaming device, the larger display is a much more comfortable to interact with. For gamers in particular the quad core processor will be a must have.  The main spoiler is the smaller 1600 mAh battery, but that can be worked around with a spare battery or portable power bank.

Overall, the Huawei Ascend Y300 provides a more balanced device for those whose primary need is a device that can do typical smartphone chores. It is a polished version of last years low cost smartphone. The Cherry Mobile Flame 2.0, on the other hand, is the first of the next generation entry level smartphones.

You can read more about the Cherry Mobile Flame 2.0 at this link.

3. Cloudfone Thrill 430x (Php7,777) - Endurance king

One way to stay on this list long time, is to offer something unique. The Cloudfone Thrill 430x  does so via a 4160 mAh battery. The large battery gives the Cloudfone Thrill 430x two to three times the battery life of other smartphones in this list. It does run on the older version of Android 4.0 out of the box, but if you are after smartphone marathon grade battery life on a budget, this is the one for you. Nothing else matters. Overall, the specifications are better than the Huawei Ascend Y300 too.

Quick specifications:
  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 4.3-inch qHD (540 x 960) display
  • Dual sim support
  • 4 GB internal storage expandable via a MicroSD card slot
  • 768 MB RAM
  • 1.2 GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor
  • 8 MP autofocus primary camera with LED Flash
  • 0.3 MP front camera
  • HSPA
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth
  • A-GPS
  • 4160 mAh battery
You can read more about the Cloudfone Thrill 430x at this link.

4. Cherry Mobile Omega HD (Php7,999) - Bringing 720p to the budget level

If you are like the latest generation of Android handset with large screens and high resolutions, but just dont think they are worth shelling out 30K for, you may want to take a look at the Cherry Mobile Omega HD.

Quick specs:
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • 5-inch IPS HD display (720 x 1280) protected by Dragontail Glass
  • 4 GB internal storage, expandable via a microSD card slot
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 1 GHz dual core Mediatek processor
  • 12 MP primary camera (BSI sensor), autofocus with flash
  • 2 MP (BSI) front camera
  • HSPA
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth
  • A-GPS
  • 2100 mAh battery
This phone offers a lot of interesting technology at a low price. The crowning glory of this phone is that it brings a large and sharp 5-inch HD display to the budget level. It has scratch resistant glass using Dragontail Glass, a technology I am not familiar with. Both the front and rear camera use Backside Illumination Sensors, which should make for better low light performance.

One area of concern would be 3D graphics performance. Mating the 1GHz dual-core MediaTek MT6577 processor with its PowerVR SGX531 graphics processing unit with a 720p display is really pushing the graphics ability of this chipset to the limit. It might not be the best choice for the hardcore gamer.

Four nice choices. So there you have it, at 8K or less, you can have a quad core processor, an HD display or a large battery, and even a nice offering from the world third largest smartphone manufacturer. Not all in one package, but given the asking price, a few compromises are in order.

HP DM1 4209AU E 1200

The HP Pavillion DM1-4209AU, the successor to the HP Pavillion DM1-4000AU, is now available in the Philippines. The HP DM1 is a small light 11.6-inch laptop which was launched last year with AMD Fusion APUs or Intel Core i3 processors.

The latest version sports a AMD’s newest Fusion APU, this one coming with a lower end dual-core CPU E-1200. This has a 1.4GHz dual core processor and Radeon HD 7310 graphics processing unit. At the outset the choice of the lower end chipset is disappointing. The AMD E-1200 will not perform better that last year AMD E-450 powered HP Pavillion DM1-4000AU. Also missing from HP DM1-4209AU is a USB 3.0 port.

Notably, the HP DM1-4209AU competitor is  the new 11.6-inch Sony Vaio E with a faster AMD E2-1800 APU which has a dual core 1.7 GHz processor, more powerful AMD Radeon 7340 graphics and has a USB 3.0 port.

The HP DM1-4209AU at Php20,950 is cheaper than  the 11.6-inch Sony Vaio E which costs Php23,990. The HP DM1-4209AU also comes with a larger 500 GB hard drive, as compared to the 320 GB unit found in the 11.6-inch Sony Vaio E. On the other hand the 11.6-inch Sony Vaio E comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, while the  HP DM1-4209AU comes with Windows 7 Starter.

The new HP DM1-4209AU is not a bad deal for its asking price. But for a little more money, 11.6-inch Sony Vaio E is the more capable device. The HP DM1-4209AU is also not better than last years HP DM1-4000AU.

All in all, I am a bit disappointed about this release.

Quick Specs:

  • Windows 7 Starter
  • 11.6-inch (1366 x 768 display)
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 500GB hard drive
  • 802.11b/g/n wireless
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • USB 2.0
  • HDMI out
  • 3.5 pounds
  • 5 hours battery

Samsung Reported To Update Galaxy S II And Galaxy Note Smartphones To Jelly Bean

Samsung Galaxy S II owners are probably content enough to have gotten the Android 4.0 update but those same owners will certainly be giddy after hearing this tidbit of news. According to SamMobile, Samsung is currently testing the preliminary builds of Android 4.1— also known as Jelly Bean. In fact—the same source claims testing has gone well for Samsung and Samsung should release the latest version of the Android OS (Android 4.1.1) by September or October— if all goes well. Of course this is expected to apply to the international variants of the smartphone— so you American owners of the device will have to add a few months after the initial launch.

Oh and you Galaxy Note owners won’t be left out of the blue either as that device is set to receive the Jelly Bean update as well— though a specific time frame for that device is anyone’s guess. If this is indeed true Samsung— well done to you. Well done.

BBM Coming To iPhone Next Month

If you have ever used a BlackBerry, you are probably aware of the BBM phenomenon. RIMs proprietary BlackBerry Messenger is a versatile utility praised by its fans worldwide, but so far its span has been limited since it only runs on BlackBerry handsets.

However, there is a slight chance of seeing BBM on iOS devices in the near future. Supposedly, at a recent social media conference held in Toronto, Canada, RIMs co-CEO Jim Balsillie mentioned the companys intentions to bring BlackBerry Messenger to the iPhone by making it available for download through the App Store on April 26. Furthermore, an update to RIMs instant messenger may land later this summer taking advantage of a new “notification system.”

Due to the nature of BBMs way of operation, we remain rather skeptical about this rumor and we wish we could verify its credibility. After all, using the messenger requires you to have a unique PIN code, which is hardwired to a particular BlackBerry smartphone, and a workaround to the issue has not been mentioned yet. Could this be an early April fools joke?

Chrysler’s First in vehicle Wireless Charger

Whether you are a professional driver, a road warrior, or you just use your car to get for your daily commute, you probably feel the need to use your smartphone in your vehicle on a regular basis.

One of the biggest inconveniences in using a smartphone in a car these days is the charging process. You need all sorts of annoying power cords to keep your gadget alive, with all the problems associated with it. Wireless charging would be a pretty obvious solution to this problem, at least in theory, but for now there is no established wireless technology that can be used on a large scale in the automotive industry.

However, that could well change in the near future, according to an official press release we got from Chrysler. According to the release, Chrysler’s Mopar division is planning to become the world’s first ever car manufacturer to completely eliminate power cords from cars. Starting with the 2013 Dodge Dart, Chrysler’s cars will offer an optional in-vehicle wireless charging system, available to all clients for $199.99, plus installation fees.

The wireless charging system consists of a dedicated charging “mat”, placed inside the center console where users can simply toss their compatible devices, start their car up, and begin charging.

While Chrysler’s wireless charging solution seems fairly straightforward and convenient, there are still a couple of quirks that the automaker needs to solve in order to make someone like me pay over 200 bucks for this. First of all, according to Chrysler, the system will work with iPhones, BlackBerries, some MP3 players, as well as a bunch of Android-based smartphones and even small-size tablets. However, it’s still unclear exactly what devices will be supported.

Considering the fact that there are very few devices featuring built-in wireless charging functions these days (I actually don’t know any, to be honest), you will probably need some kind of a third party solution, probably both hardware and software.

Secondly, as far as I can tell from Chrysler’s press release, in order to make the system work properly on your phone, you will need a  special case. To get that case, you will most likely have to pay an additional couple of bucks, so all in all, the system might well go over $250 total, which, for me, seems a bit steep, especially considering that a home-use wireless charger goes for less than $50.

Finally, I personally am not very drawn to a wireless charging system that only allows you to move your gadget for a couple of inches. I know, I know, I’m being a bit harsh on Chrysler, especially considering the fact that the automaker is a pioneer in this field. For the time being, we should probably just wait out. Maybe Chrysler system will be cheaper and easier to use in reality than it sounds right now in theory.

What do you guys think, would you be interested in getting this option for your Dodge Dart for two or three hundred dollars? Or do you think that someone will come with a better and cheaper solution soon enough?

Baldurs Gate for the iPad now available

It has been a long time since I played computer games. After almost a decade of  I did some gaming again when I got my first Android Phone. Still in two years, I have downloaded all of 11 games, 7 of which were purchases. Of these 11, I only played one this year.

Most games I have installed have seen less than five hours of use. Only Angry Birds, Robo Defense and Symphony of Eternity have seen countless hours of use. Symphony of Eternity was the last game I bought, and I have been contemplating buying another title from KEMCO GAMES.

But there is one game, even a long time retired gamer like me is looking forward too: Baldurs Gate: Enhanced Edition. I played Baldurs Gate, Icewind and Neverwinters Nights a decade ago. Neverwinter Nights, and its expansion packs, being the last PC Game I played.

Baldurs Gate was awesome. It is the best Dungeons & Dragons franchise translation to the PC, and if I could have one PC Game brought back today, it would be the one. Baldurs Gate Enhanced Edition contains the original Baldurs Gate campaign and the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion.

The game now available for iPad now, with an Android version promised but no updated ETA announced. The game costs a reasonable US$9.99 and is a 1.7 GB download.

It does not look like the it will ported to phones. Given the UI design on the iPad, it would seem to be a tablet only game. Might make the purchase of an iPad mini really worthwhile.

You can buy Baldurs Gate Enhanced Edition at iTunes.

Google Play Gift Cards Launching Soon

Not too long ago, Android went through a rebranding with their app marketplace. Once called the Android Market, it was changed to the Google Play Store. How you play books, Im not really sure. One thing that’s been available with the App Store on iOS are iTunes gift cards. They make for a nice gift with the hundreds of thousands of apps available, and anything else you want to buy in iTunes.

It seems that Google Play gift cards will be launching soon after some photos leaked. Android Central received a few pics of Google Play gift cards available in $10 and $25 and are clearly branded as such. Whether you want music, movies, apps, or even books, the gift card will work with anything available in the Play Store.

As of right now, there is no word on when and where they’ll be available. It would be pretty safe to assume that they’d be available online as well as in popular retail stores such as Best Buy, Target, Wallmart, and others. Google has never made money from phones and tablets directly, but indirectly through mobile advertising and their marketplace of apps, movies, books, music, etc.

They are a bit behind launching gift cards, but I guess now is better than never. Have a friend or family member who uses Android? Here’s a potential present for the holidays. You do know there’s only a few months left to shop, right?

Nokia Asha 501 Introduced Breaking The Barriers

Well since announcing v2, ive not posted much about news here but today i am doing so because this is really just a breakthrough by Nokia. Going back to the topic, earlier today Stephen Elop went on stage in India and announced the newest member to the Asha family which is the Nokia 501. This device is truly special as it is the first device to usher in the new UI of Asha devices. The specs of this device is pretty blanch and includes a 3" 240 X 320 LCD capacitive screen, a 3.2MP camera, a 1200mAh battery, and a microSD card slot. Well these specs look really underwhelming in the world of quad cores and 8 cores, but what i think stands out the most in this device is the standby time of upto 48 days which is just mindblowing. You have to remember that this device is not a dumbphone and can do nearly as much as a smartphone. On the downside of things this device does not come with 3G and only works with 2G but that can be overlooked by the $99 price tag and the targeted developing markets. In the line of hardware the Asha 501 doesnt come short as the body it comes in really resembles the Lumia lineup with bright and vibrant colors as well as a very close attention to detailing on the device itself. In the software side of things, Nokia is introducing a whole new user interface which include swiping gestures and swiping gestures. The whole navigation of the new software looks to be pretty similar to the swipe friendly meego OS. Apart from that Nokia also brought in their Xpress browser which is capable of compressing up to 90% of your data thus reducing your data usage. Alongside that Facebook and Twitter are also there out of the box and to add up to that 40 EA games are free and downloadable from the Nokia Store. Not coming up short Nokia also announces that popular applications like foursquare, wechat, CNN, etc are in the works for the Asha platform and will come soon. Additionally they also mentioned that HERE maps will be making its way to the Asha 501 by Q3. Well the main star of the software is what Nokia calls the fastlane which is one of the two homescreens present on the Asha 501. Fastlane is basically like a multitasking page for you where your most recent tasks are tabled there. To cut things short here the Nokia Asha 501 is not short of features for that $99 price tag. What it offers really is unbeatable at this price point. This phone might have pa standing chance at swaying users to get this device opposed to cheaper android devices. As i said earlier the year Low end handsets like the asha lineup by Nokia does make impact on this smartphone world. As to Nokia they are doing a very good job and they are following what Samsung is doing by giving their entire lineup the same look. But Nokia does it way better because Samsung merly just resize one device and call it another. Stay tuned for episode 1 of Perspective 101 which i will discuss about this matter in even more contrast.

HTCs CEO Shows Off The M7 Confirms The M7 Name

Well here is a seemingly similar move which HTCs CEO Peter Chou did. Apparently he was using the unannounced M7 at the companys year end party in Taipei. Above is an image of him using the camera, we could only catch a glimpse of the white back but the back does looks like the leaked images. Other than that he also somewhat confirmed the M7 name not by saying it but by repeatedly shouting it. Check out the video below after the break.

LG Nexus 4 E960

The LG Nexus 4 features a 4.7" True HD-IPS+ LCD screen of 768 x 1280 resolution and 608 nits of brightness. Theres about 8% more screen real estate than on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the extra surface mostly due to the display being wider.

LG uses a screen technology called Zerogap touch - its basically a laminated screen so theres no air between the screen layers (which causes glare) and it uses in-cell touch technology. The top layer is Gorilla Glass 2 for protection.

Full specifications of LG Nexus 4 E960 :
